ALARP Solutions is proud to announce that Bradley Robb and Aaron Young, Directors at ALARP Solutions, are contributory authors to the recently published book:

The BUsiness of Outer Space Book

The Business of Outer Space: Commercial and Legal Issues.

Published by Springer Nature.

Their chapter, “Space Industry System-of-Systems Risk Considerations,” explores the evolving risk landscape of the global space industry and the challenges of managing safety and assurance across complex, interconnected enterprises.

Managing Risk in Complex Space Systems

As commercial space activity accelerates, programs are increasingly delivered through multi-organisational, system-of-systems architectures involving launch providers, satellite operators, communications networks, regulatory bodies, and international stakeholders.

This shift introduces new challenges in:

  • System safety and engineering assurance.

  • Governance and accountability.

  • Enterprise risk management.

  • Regulatory compliance in high-consequence environments.

The chapter examines how established safety and risk management principles must adapt to support the commercialisation of space while maintaining public confidence and operational resilience.

Broader Relevance Across High-Consequence Industries

While focused on the space sector, the themes discussed are directly applicable to other complex industries, including defence, nuclear, maritime, aerospace, and critical infrastructure. Effective governance frameworks, structured assurance cases, and system-of-systems thinking are increasingly essential across all high-

reliability domains.

ALARP is pleased to contribute to the global discussion on how emerging industries can be governed safely, responsibly, and sustainably.

A special thank you to Rhys Hutchinson for his support in reviewing and refining the chapter.
